Last week I attended a meeting of churches that are interested in starting special needs ministries and/or networking with other churches around special needs ministries.  Several churches were represented and this pleased me.

Joni and Friends is the group that organized the meeting.  Joni and Friends is an international organization dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of people affected by disability.  It’s founder, Joni Eareckson Tada, was injured during a diving accident and these injuries left her a wheelchair bound quadriplegic.  After years of rehabilitation, Joni dedicated herself to accelerating Christian ministry to the disabled community throughout the world.

Joni and Friends offers a daily radio program, weekly television broadcasts, training to promote ministry to those persons affected with disability and, Christian curriculum development.  Also, the organization serves hundreds of families through Family Retreats.  Family Retreats are five-day summer respites where families affected by disability enjoy rest and recreation.  Families have the opportunity to meet and fellowship with other families.  In addition, families receive practical support from trained Short Term Missionaries.

Visit Joni and Friends.org for more information about their programs.   Also, see their Web site for a database of faith-based camps for kids with disabilities.
