Question: My 8 year old daughter has been diagnosed recently with expressive and receptive language disabilities. The evaluator felt that it was mostly cognitive in nature and her iq tested at 70. She seems completely normal in every way other than than the struggle she has with learning. I have homeschooled her to this point but man of those that have worked with her seem to think she would thrive in a school environment. My question is..what grade do I put her in? She should be agewise going into 3rd grade in the fall but she is really at a mid first grade level. Also, I don't feel good about putting her in a public school but can't find a christian school which will take kids with special needs. Can someone help me with this? Do you know of a Christian school with a special needs program and how do I determine the correct grade for her? Thanks so much!

Does your daughter have the maturity level of her peers? If so, I recommend that you keep her with her peer group. If she gets along better with younger children and is somewhat immature, I recommend that you enroll her at her academic level. A few Christian schools I know about have supports for kids with special needs: St. Francis School near Highland Mall (they use AISD therapists to augment their program); St. Louis Catholic School on Burnet, Redeemer Lutheran School on Anderson Lane andSt. Mary's Catholic School in downtown. While it's not a Christian school, The Capitol School of Austin (see it listed in the schools category on Special Needs Neighborhood) works specifically with kids with communication disorders. It's a small school with a warm feel to it. Also, the folks at The Odyssey School (see schools on Special Needs Neighborhood) may be able to assist you too. I hope that this information helps.
