Question: I have a one year old and I am wondering if there are daycare centers in Austin that are more sensitive to developmental delays than others. Any information or suggestions on questions to ask when evaluating daycare centers is appreciated.

I have heard good things about Open Door DayCare. It's listed on this Web site under schools. Also, I have heard that the Jewish Community Association Early Childhood Program is very good. Their phone number is 512) 735-8100. Also, the Rise School is listed on this site and they take kiddos as young as 14 months old. It's an inclusive school designed for kids with developmental delays. In addition, see the posting for Sammy's House in the childcare category. Their programs are really good. Also, ask any of these places for recommendations.

Hi I have a 2 1/2 year old with Down Sydrome and he goes to Sammy's House. WE LOVE IT THERE. The classes are small and it feels like a huge family. I do know that they are currently enrolling. If you would like to talk more please feel free to contact me. Leah Hollenbeck 512-565-5579 Leapea82@aol.com Cameron's Mom

Definitely ask alot of questions, but drop in when they are not expecting you and watch what the care providers are doing. Are they singing to or talking to the children in a kind and gentle way. Are they singing silly songs while changing diapers? Are there any propped bottles or children awake and hangign out in the "Crib". What plan do they have in place for children who do not nap for 2 hours or do not wnat to lay on a mat while awake while waiting for the 2 hours to be up? I am very jaded and not at all happy with conventional daycares...sorry about negativity. All of them know how to talk the talk and know what you want to hear and the laws. But you must educate yourself and use your eyes and ears to SEE what actually happens while you child is there.

I just started a home daycare in Circle C for kids ages 2-5. I can take kids as young as 18 months. I have a license through Texas DFPS, 15 years of teaching experience (special ed), a master's degree in special ed, and two kids on the autism spectrum. If you are still looking for care and would consider family based care (rather than a daycare center), please check out my website at www.alenaspreschool.com. As for daycare centers, I have to agree that Sammy's House is fantastic.
