Question: I have a one year old son who has some developmental delays with his social and communication skills. He is too young for a diagnosis of ASD (or anything else really) and has made major progress since we started private and state (Easter Seals) intervention services four months ago. Still, this whole process has been pretty difficult for me and my husband. I'm wondering if there are any support groups for babies with developmental delays in the Austin area? I know there are autism support groups, but my son is too young for an autism diagnosis and he might not even have autism, so I'm not sure we "belong" in those groups at this point. Thanks!

I just found this website and I know that you posted this over 8 months ago but I wanted to respond. There are a whole host of reasons that a child may have developmental delays besides austism. My daughter was diagnosed before birth as having a chromosome abnormality called 18P Syndrome. There are hundreds of minor chromosome changes that a child might have that can cause developmental delays and your child can be tested by a blood test. You can get a referral from your pediatrician to see a geneticist who may be able to give you a diagnosis. I don't know if you have insurance or medicaid but there is a genetics practice called Specially for Children located in central Austin. It might be worth looking into so that you may be able to figure out just what you are dealing with so you know just how to help your child. It is so important that we figure out what we're dealing with while they're young. Our daughter also receives physical therapy and speech therapy through Easter Seals. They are a great organization. Feel free to email me if you want to talk. My email address is laurap100805@aim.com. I live in North Austin.
