The local chapter of the Autism Society of America is an all-volunteer organization that provides support and networking opportunities. ASGA has a very active Yahoo group as well as an informative website (www.autism-society.org/chapter244). It sponsors a monthly daytime support meeting and the Autism Treatment Forum. As a 501 (c) 3 organization ASGA accepts tax-deductible donations and, in turn, can pay for workshops and other events of interest to its members. The big negative of ASGA is that so few people join and volunteer. Many parents participate in the Yahoo group and get on the mailing list but don’t take the next step to pay dues and help. Meanwhile the 15-20 people who run the chapter are stretched a little thin. ASGA has a wealth of information for parents and the potential to be an outstanding organization if just a few more people took an active role. Even now though, ASGA is doing very good work for the local autism community.

I found ASGA to be one of the best places to turn after my son was first diagnosed with autism. I highly recommend the support group.
