I work at a library run by the state that specializes in resources about young children with special needs and adults with disabilities. I wish more families would borrow books and DVDs from us.
The Texas Department of State Health Services Audiovisual Library houses three collections. We have the 1) Early Childhood Intervention Collection, 2) The Rehabilitation Services Collection and the 3) Audiovisual Library Collection.
1) The Early Childhood Intervention Collection has books, children’s books, journals, DVDs, and videos about disabilities and parenting dealing primarily with children from birth to three. We do have some materials that deal with school aged children. Examples of topics include: autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, challenging behavior, brain development, nutrition, motor skills, sibling issues, etc.
2) The Rehabilitation Services Collection has books, journals, DVDs, and videos about adults with disabilities. Examples of topics include: transitions, disability awareness and rights, brain injury, deafness, blindness, employment for the disabled, sign language, mental illness, adult living skills, physical fitness and nutrition for the disabled, and autobiographies of the disabled, etc.
Our online catalog is at www.texashealthlibrary.com

I think that this site offers such wonderful information to people and their families on disabilities in general. I wish I had known about it sooner because I would have started reading the books that i checked out every chance i got. Thanks for a place for people with special needs and their families. I have often found that people ask about how much I love our daughter because she has special needs. i tell them that we do not love her one bit less because of a physical challenge. My mother-in-law does not quite understand that. She has other opinions on it. thanks again.
